Thai elephants playing basketball

The Island Safari Centre on Koh Samui is teaching six-year old Malie, and nine-year old Toktak to use their trunks to perform basketball skills, in an effort to improve their health and vitality.

Organisers at the Island Safari centre, which cares for the animals, say the huge beasts have to undergo rigorous training to learn the basics of the popular game.

Training starts by teaching elephants the basics in ball control, before they move on to hold it in their trunk and throw it at the hoop.

To some this may seem cruel but it’s better than these beasts being walked along the night streets of Bangkok for tourists to feed bananas.
